Latoya Temilton family plans criminal, civil litigation for 12-year-old’s death

The Temilton family on Thursday asked for room to allow them to study the investigation report into the death of 12-year-old Latoya Temilton.

The Grade 7 pupil drowned during a school excursion at Wag ‘n Bietjie campsite in Olifantsfontein in January.
On Thursday morning, Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane received a report from an independent law firm regarding Temiltons’ death.
The findings of the probe, conducted by Ntshupetsang Attorneys, found possible negligence on the part of the principal and educators.
Nchupetsang Attorneys recommended that the principal and educators be charged with misconduct for providing dishonest and falsified information to the department and/ or its agent following their testimonies, which contradicted the pupils.
The family's spokesperson, Gordhan Temilton, said they will engage with the media on the way forward once they have reviewed the report.
“Please allow us to study the investigation provided by the Department of Education and only post that shall we engage with the public and the media on what we are looking to do. It is evident that litigation will be both criminal and civil.”
