Lawbreakers won’t have it easy this festive season: Mbalula

Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula has sent a stern warning to motorists to obey the rules of the road during the upcoming festive season.
Mbalula said law enforcement officials won’t take it easy on motorists who break the law during the December and January holiday period, which is traditionally the deadliest time of the year on the country’s roads.
"They will be arrested, and they will be dealt with and the vehicles that unroadworthy they will be impounded," Mbalula said in Sandton on Friday.
The minister spent time outside the Gautrain station in Sandton where he kicked off the festive season safety campaign.
He also expressed his disappointment in taxi operators who don't wear masks in their vehicles.
"But in the taxis, you can see that they are not strict, the driver is the first one to take off the mask when he is supposed to ensure that passengers do wear their masks.
"You can see, the other one was fighting with us here when we were coming up the roads here. The taxi is full and the windows are closed.
"You are allowed 100% capacity, but you must open the windows and wear a mask," he said.
The department hopes to decrease fatalities by 20% this festive season.
