Death toll from horror crash rises to 20
The number of children who have died in a horror crash between a taxi and a truck on the R25 between Verena and Bronkhorstspruit has risen to 19.
ER24's Russel Meirng said the taxi driver also died, bringing the total to 20.
Meiring said paramedics arrived on scene to find fire services already in attendance.
"Fire services had already extinguished the burning vehicle, which was found lying on its side," said Meiring.
Meiring said paramedics found approximately 20 children inside the vehicle.
"Once the flames had been extinguished, paramedics found approximately 13 children lying trapped inside the vehicle. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for the children and they were declared dead on the scene," said Meiring.
Meiring said several other children were found on the scene.
"It is believed that these children had been pulled out of the taxi by members of the community," said Meiring.
Meiring said the other children sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical and were treated for their injuries and provided with advanced life support interventions before they were transported to various hospitals in the area for further treatment.
