“Reports from the scene indicate that the bus was travelling from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg,” Netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said.

Netcare911 paramedics worked alongside the provincial emergency medical services and other services on the scene.

“All injured have been transported to various hospitals in the area for further medical care. Some of those who are in a critical condition were airlifted to nearby hospitals for further medical care,” Mathe said.

According to an ANC Gauteng tweet, eight ANC marshals died when the bus overturned on the N1 in the Free State. The bus was believed to have been carrying ANC people from Ekurhuleni, on the East Rand, returning home from the ANC’s August 3 local government elections manifesto launch in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

In a statement earlier on Sunday, ANC spokesman Zizi Kodwa said: “The African National Congress has learnt with sadness of a fatal accident in the Free State where a bus carrying comrades returning from the ANC manifesto rally in Port Elizabeth overturned.

“The ANC is still clarifying details about the accident and will issue further details once all pertinent information has been verified. Our thoughts are with the injured and bereaved at this time,” he said.
