Legal action to be taken against school disrupters: Motshekga
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga has threatened legal action against anyone who disrupts schooling during the Covid-19 pandemic.
This comes amid a decision by the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) that all schools should close their doors until the peak of the pandemic has passed.
South Africa now has over 290 000 cumulative Covid-19 cases and 4 346 deaths.
In a statement, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said the Council of Education Ministers (CEM) will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation at schools on a weekly bases.
"The government is extremely concerned about teachers, principals, non-teaching staff who use any platform to attack government for going back to work; ostensibly creating an impression that they should be treated differently from the rest of the other public servants," the minister said in a statement on Tuesday.
Motshekga warned that legal action will be taken against individuals and groups that continue to disrupt schooling.
"We would like to emphasise the fact that the reopening and closure of schools is a legislative responsibility accorded to national and provincial authorities only.”
