‘Legal eagle’ George Bizos dies

Renowned human rights lawyer George Bizos has died at the age of 92.

He died on Wednesday afternoon. 

President Cyril Ramaphosa paid tribure to Bizos during his discussions with the South African National Editors Forum (Sanef). 

Ramaphosa said Bizos’ health deteriorated in recent weeks but that the family of the distinguished lawyer assured him he was comfortable in his final hours. 

“I’ve just received news that legal eagle of our country George Bizos has passed away. This is a very sad moment for our country. I spoke to George Bizos about two months ago and even as I spoke to him it did appear like his health was not in good shape. 

“This afternoon I spoke to Alexi, his son, and he told me that his father was facing great difficulties and I asked him if he was comfortable and he said ‘yes he was comfortable’.”

The couple confirmed the blaze in a statement on Wednesday. The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation said that the couple did not sustain any injuries The statement also thanked the staff and members of the local fire department. "The couple did not sustain any injuries and were in good spirits considering events that unfolded around daybreak today.

In his long and distinguished legal career Bizos represented prominent political activists in high-profile political trials.  

He represented Walter Sisulu and Nelson Mandela in both the Treason and Rivonia Trials.  

He has also been hailed for his role in the drafting of the South African Constitution. 

“George Bizos is one of those lawyers who contributed immensely to the attainment of our democracy. He worked very closely with Nelson Mandela, Arthur Chaskalson and many others,” Ramaphosa said. 

“The news about George Bizos’ passing is sad news for us as South Africans.” 

The late veteran was often very vocal about corruption

“He will sorely be missed,” Ramaphosa added.
