Lesufi assures parents: Gauteng will be ready for resumption of schooling

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says no pupil will be allowed to attend school without a face mask.

Lesufi briefed the media on Thursday ahead of the resumption of the academic year on June 1. 

 

He said preparations for the return of 3 000 Grade 7 and 12s are at an advanced stage, with the personal protective equipment due to be delivered first. 

 

"Each school will receive an allocation of more than R15 000 each to allow them to start deep cleaning. We have given them eight days of cleaning. They will appoint local contractors or add to the number of staff members they have who are already cleaning.”

Lesufi also confirmed that the department is in the process of recruiting 50 new teachers.

 

"Most of our educators are above the age of 60, so we creating a pool of new teachers. For now, we are starting with 50 but we know we will need 300. Teachers who are above 60 and believe they have comorbidities can work from home, we will recruit substitute teachers to assist." 

 

Parents who want to continue teaching their children online will be provided with support and those who want to move to homeschooling will also receive assistance from the department.
