Lesufi was answering questions at a virtual siting of the provincial legislature on Tuesday morning.

Lesufi was responding to a question posed by a Democratic Alliance (DA) member on the Covid-19 relief funding for schools.

He confirmed that the department has provided funding to fee-paying school where parents are battling to pay due to Covid-19.

"The department has bailed out all fee-paying and no fee-paying schools in the province as a result of them struggling to meet their financial obligations.

"We have provided financial assistance to all our schools," Lesufi said.

Covid-19 recovery 'pregnant with great opportunity', says Ramaphosa

Ramaphosa made the comments on Tuesday at the Infrastructure South Africa Project Preparations Roundtable and Marketplace. "The post Covid-19 reconstruction and recovery phase is a phase and period which is pregnant with great possibility which is full of promise and opportunity.

Lesufi said, as part of attempts to ensure that schools do not collapse, the department also paid out water and electricity bills.

"You might be aware that one of the powerful tools that we are using to fight Covid-19 is to allow staff and learners to wash their hands frequently.

"Failure of parents to pay school fees would have led to some of the schools not receiving water purely because the municipalities would have terminated their service.

"So in stepping in, we felt that we assisted these schools in fighting covdid19 besides the challenges faced by parents."
