Lesufi: Gauteng ready for full reopening of schools
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has assured parents that the department is ready for the full reopening of schools on Monday.
Primary school pupils will all return to school on Monday after being on a rotational basis due to Covid-19.
Amid concerns from parents over the safety of children amid the pandemic, the Department of Basic Education said the decision was approved by the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) and advised by scientists.
Speaking on Sunday, Lesufi admitted that while there are still some issues around social distancing, the department is working around the clock to provide mobile classes.
“Yes, we are ready for tomorrow (Monday). We have 2 300 schools in Gauteng and only 57 schools have overcrowded challenges. Of the 57 schools that have overcrowded or other challenges like water, electricity and other things we are putting additional mobile classrooms.
“I have personally written letters to all the mayors in our province requesting that they assist us with water challenges, because to fight Covid-19 we need water.
“But we only have 57 schools where we know that the issue of social distancing will be a problem but we are working around the clock to ensure that we have mobile classes.”
