Lesufi was delivering the keynote address at the launch of the school governing body (SGB) elections on Wednesday.

The Gauteng elections will be conducted between 15 March and 30 April.

Lesufi said South Africa is still one of the few countries where parents are still at the centre of education.

“We opted for this form of governance because we believe government cannot be everywhere, every day, every time knowing that we felt that the parents should be at the centre of determining how education is run in our country.

“It is a policy position we support, defend and we still believe it is the correct system,” said Lesufi.

“There might be limitations and gaps but what we know is that when parents take interest in the education of their children no one will change the need to have a quality education.”

He urged the incoming SGB to take their role seriously and invest in ICT.

“I want to urge you as the SGB to properly take your role seriously and ensure that the best among us are selected for this role, it is a process that cannot be undermined.

“The area that I want to urge the incoming SGB to work around is the use of ICT, we are now compelled to use gadgets, connectivity and to ensure that every one that is needed in a meeting is part of that meeting.

“In using ICT we may regress in excluding other people due to lack of resources but now education and learning has to continue even when learners are at home, so we have no choice but to invest a lot of money for this to happen.”
