Push for Motsoeneng to stay at SABC

An internal SABC letter - on an official letter head - is doing the rounds, in which the SABC board requests Communications Minister Faith Muthambi, to appoint Hlaudi Motsoaneng as acting Chief Operations Officer.

This comes after the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled this week that Motsoeneng's permanent appointment as COO be set aside - ruling it was invalid and based on irrational decisions.

"The application for leave to appeal is dismissed with costs on the grounds that there is no reasonable prospect of success in an appeal and there is no other compelling reason why it should be heard," the appeal court held in a ruling made public on Monday.

Last year, Judge Dennis Davies ruled in the Western Cape High Court that given the adverse findings of Public Protector Thuli Madonsela against Motsoeneng, it had been irrational on the part of Communications Minister Faith Muthambi to appoint him as COO in a permanent capacity.

The letter that started circulating late Thursday night, states that Motsoeneng act in the position until 18 December 2016.

The SABC Board's next scheduled meeting is on 28 October 2016.

According to the letter, Motsoeneng is already in the post - as it states the date as 16 September 2016.

However, Ministry's Mish Molakeng says the latest development is news to him.

"I don't know even if such a letter does exist. If they have a letter they will sent it to us, they won't leak it to the media. We have not received such a letter. We will wait for them (the SABC) to clarify.

The SABC did not want to go on record with a response early Friday morning.
