South Africa and ten other countries were added to the list following the discovery of the Omicron variant.
Tourism Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has welcomed the decision by the UK to remove South Africa from its controversial ‘red list’ for travel.
South Africa and ten other countries were added to the list following the discovery of the Omicron variant.
Upon the discovery the UK government imposed tough restrictions to travellers from South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zambia, Malawi, and Nigeria.
Travellers were required to do a ten-day mandatory hotel quarantine upon arrival at their own expense.
In a statement, Sisulu says the lift is a step in the right direction for tourism sector.
"When South Africa was added to the red list last month the implementation of the hotel quarantine instead of at home quarantine was a huge deterrent for British citizens who are considering coming to South Africa at a time our tourism industry was just beginning to recover.
“South Africa's borders remain open and our government and tourism industry have been working extremely hard to implement safety regulations to ensure that we are ready for all inbound visitors."
