Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga recently told members of parliament that the country has 31,462 vacant teaching posts, with Limpopo accounting for 4,933.

The announcement follows a recent critique by the  DA, with the opposition party saying the vacancies deprive pupils of quality education.

"These vacant posts deprive our learners of quality education and result in overcrowded and understaffed schools,” the DA in Limpopo said.

"The failure of Limpopo’s Department of Education to fill vacant teaching posts weakens our entire education system, negatively impacts learners’ opportunities to excel academically, and significantly reduces their prospects for tertiary education and employment.”

However, the department maintains that the vacant posts do not equate to a lack of teachers in classrooms since temporary teachers have been appointed.

“MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya dismisses the ill-informed statement by the DA. There is, therefore, no deprivation of quality education to learners in Limpopo as DA claims,” the department countered.

"She reiterates that the Limpopo Department of Education does not have a situation where learners are without teachers due to PERSAL-recorded vacancies.

"The department will advertise 2550 School Management Team (promotion posts) posts to permanently fill these posts, which are currently occupied by temporary educators, as earlier stated."

The department says the advertisement will be published next week.
