The Mpho Mathoho Foundation has pledged its support to 80,000 families during the national Covid-19 lockdown.

Speaking at the launch of the campaign at the Vhembe council chambers on Tuesday, founder Mpho Mathoho said the cause is close to his heart.

Mathoho said he was once homeless and sympathises with the families.

“Let’s help other people. I was also helped.

“I’m doing this because I know what it’s like to sleep by the river in the winter when you don’t have a blanket.”

This follows last week's decision to challenge the rationality of three separate lockdown-related issues at the High Court. The party is demanding what it calls effective parliamentary oversight mechanisms to watch the state's handling of the Covid-19 crisis. Interim party leader John Steenhuisen says the current setup does not effectively involve Parliament in government's decision-making around the pandemic.

Vhembe District Municipality Mayor Dowelani Nenguda welcomed the generous donation.

“We are very much delighted that the hungry within the Vhembe District Municipality are going to survive, more especially during this period of the coronavirus pandemic,” says Nenguda.

“Your helping hand is going to change the livelihoods in quite a number of families.”

Nenguda says he’s confident the food parcels will help boost the province’s efforts in dealing with the impact of Covid-19.
