Updated | By Nathan Daniels
Limpopo police are investigating the death of a newborn baby who fell into a pit toilet in Mankweng outside Polokwane.
One of the babies fell into the toilet shortly after a woman gave birth to twins.
Provincial police spokesperson Makhada Mashiane says they are investigating the mother's motive.
The 30-year-old woman and the surviving baby was admitted to hospital on Sunday.
"It is alleged that the woman had some complications then decided to go to the toilet where she gave birth. One of the twins fell into the toilet, the family members alerted the rescue team who arrived on time to rescue one of the twins."
A case of concealment of birth is also being investigated.
"The meaning; somebody is trying cover up the birth of a person."
The investigation will seek to determine whether the complications she experienced during birth was the reason why the woman went to the toilet or whether she had the intention to conceal the birth.
