The Health Department in Limpopo says it has recorded its first case of cholera at the Musina hospital in the north of the province.
The case was confirmed by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) on Tuesday.
"This is a case of a 26-year-old Zimbabwean national who presented at Musina Hospital on the 26th of May 2023 with a severe form of diarrhoea, vomiting, and dehydration. The patient was admitted, isolated, and treated, while at the same time specimen were collected and sent to the NICD for testing," says Limpopo Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Health Dr Phophi Ramathuba.
She has reiterated the department's state of readiness to combat the spread of the cholera outbreak at Musina Hospital.
"Although the test results only came out positive today, the patient has since improved and is due to be discharged."
"State of readiness has also been strengthened in Belabela Hospital, which is bordering Gauteng's Hamanskraal area where a number of cases have also been reported," adds Ramathuba.
The disease has already claimed the lives of 23 people in Hammanskraal in the north of Tshwane.
Free State province has also recorded one death.
The Limpopo cholera case will add to the reported 114 confirmed cases in Gauteng and Free State.
