A 36-year-old father from a village in Limpopo has been arrested for accidentally killing his seven-month-old child with a pellet gun.
Provincial police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba says both parents were interviewed and it was revealed that the father was hunting for birds next to their home when the child was accidentally shot on Sunday.
He says the parents rushed the child to the local clinic where he was declared dead from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Ledwaba says the investigation is continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The father was arrested and charged with murder and the pellet gun was confiscated.
Acting provincial commissioner Jan Scheepers condemned the incident and urged communities to practice safety at all times when handling these types of weapons.
The man will make his first appearance in the Nebo Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
