The Democratic Alliance (DA) Shadow Minister of Justice,
Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach says she withdrew her nomination for the post of
the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) because she believes that
person should be a-political.
Breytenbach told the media in Cape Town this morning she was nominated for the post by the Pretoria Bar.
She accepted the nomination, but says she changed her mind because she believes that the country’s top prosecutor should be independent.
Breytenbach concedes she does regard this as a dream job, but adds she is not disappointed with her decision.
“I’m not particularly disappointed. I am happy with the job I have. I enjoy the job I have and I try to do it well.”
She adds the DA does agree with her opinion that the NDPP should ideally not belong to any political party.
Breytenbach and DA leader Mmusi Maimane addressed the media, while the interviews kicked off at the Union Buildings with the 12 candidates shortlisted for the position of NDPP.
