[LISTEN] EFF says they will wait till Monday to see the man charged with the murder of Hillary Gardee

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says even though the party desperately wants to learn the identity of the man arrested for killing Hillary Gardee, they will wait like the rest of the country until Monday when the suspect appears in court.

Mpumalanga police announced on Friday evening that the male suspect in his 30s was arrested in Schoemansville in connection with the murder of the 28-year old Gardee.

She is the daughter of former EFF Secretary General Godrich Gardee.

EFF spokesperson Sinawo Tambo spoke to the media on Friday night after police visited the Gardee family to confirm the news of the breakthrough.

“We welcome the arrest of the suspect in the murder case of Hillary Gardee and we are thankful that the police were able to meet their own target of informing us of something concrete within 72 hours. It’s a commitment that must be commended. So, in the same way that we are able to criticise, we must be able to commend and compliment and applaud the hard work that they had been doing.”

Tambo said the EFF and the family will respect the processes of the law that the identity of the suspect cannot be divulged until his first court appearance in the Nelspruit Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The announcement was made a week after Gardee went missing while shopping in Nelspruit.

Her body was discovered in bushes along the R37 road near Sabie on Tuesday, with the Gardee family later confirming she was shot in the head.

Provincial Police Commissioner in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, told the media on Friday evening Police are confident that they have arrested the correct suspect.

“We were using different evidence, difference experts that were there with the gathering of information. Everything that we did it lead us in the position to say this is the correct suspect for our case.”

Friday’s developments came during the last hours of the 72-hour timeline given to the investigating team to make arrests.

Hillary Gardee will be laid to rest in Kamagugu in Mbombela today.
