LISTEN: Govt donates R50m to irradicate hunger in Cuba
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
government has pledged to donate about R50 million to help reduce hunger in Cuba.

Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Alvin Botes says the donation was necessary, as US sanctions continue to pose a food security threat to the communist island.
Cuba has just recently marked six decades under American sanctions, with former president Donald Trump re-designating Cuba as a “state sponsor of terrorism”.
South Africa has a close relationship with Cuba due to the role it played in assisting liberation movements across the continent.
Botes told the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation that the intervention was necessary.
“I thought it is important that the parliamentary committee and yourself chair, and members to get briefed about the fact that we have committed to allocate an amount of 50 million rands for special intervention purposes as it relates to the Cuban people, who have experienced real food security challenges, because of the extra territory sanctions that have been levelled against the people of Cuba by the United States of America,” said Botes.
