LISTEN: Man suspected of starting Alex fire dies

Gauteng police have confirmed that a man suspected of starting a fire in Alexandra, which destroyed at least 500 shacks, has died in hospital.

The blaze has left at least 150 families without a roof over their heads.


Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says the man was allegedly attacked by community members when the fire broke out on Thursday.


The community accused the man of starting the fire.


“We are appealing to those of in the community who witnessed the assault please let them come forward and give us information, we have started the investigation and we believe this incident happened in full view of others.”


Police are investigating a case of murder.

The man was apparently involved in a fight with another man and dosed his shack with petrol and set it on fire.


The Gauteng Premier David Makhura is set to visit the area on Friday.
