The Department of Basic Education has confirmed the leak of a grade 12 exam paper.
This comes after whistle blowers came forward with the information on Monday.
The department’s spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says investigations are underway to establish how the Mathematics paper 2 was leaked on the eve of the exam.
“Today’s maths paper 2 was leaked because we also got a hold of it before it was written, and it was given to us by people who believed that what they were seeing was wrong.
“We are still investigating the circumstances regarding the leak and we hope that we will make progress because the people that we are talking to are giving us information, but we are deeply disappointed,” he adds.

Covid-19 adding to depression and suicide among pupils, says education activist
"Covid-19 created a challenge of inadequate preparedness amongst learners, particularly those from township and rural schools. It is for this reason that the government should find a way to dispatch social workers to schools with a view to assist in tracking learners who show signs of being suicidal.
According to Mhlanga, several pupils from Gauteng and Limpopo have been fingered in the scandal.
Despite the leak, the exam was written by matric pupils across the country on Monday morning.
“The exams went smoothly today. The exam paper was written except that some candidates had the paper before it was written; it doesn’t mean that all the thousands of candidates did not write. They wrote the paper but those few that had access to the question paper clearly had an advantage,” he explains.
“The timetable continues. The exam will not stop because one paper has been leaked.”
Mhlanga warns those found guilty will have to answer for their actions.
“If you do something like this or get involved and you use a paper which has been obtained illegally and you are found, you could be banned for up to 3 years from writing the exam in the country but the police could also come with their own sanction which could land you in jail.
“You can’t cheat your way out of school.”
