The debate on e-tolls is set to rumble on with Transport Minister Fikile Mbabula postponing his much-anticipated announcement on the future of the unpopular user-pay system.
Mbalula was set to announce the resolution of his meeting with various stakeholders on Thursday but shifted the goal posts, saying further deliberations were needed.
Mbalula held a media briefing in Pretoria where he announced that cabinet is yet to finalise a decision on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP), including e-tolls.
"We wish to state on record to clarify that cabinet has not arrived yet a decision with regard to the future of GFIP," said Mbalula.
It will be another two weeks before Gauteng motorists learn their fate.
"Cabinet decided that we must decided that we must go back and do some work and report in two weeks when cabinet reconvenes."
Mbalula admitted the system is ahead of its time.
"It was a technological thing that was new, introduced in South Africa copied from somewhere. Was it ready for the developmental market of an African country? We'll say 'no'," said Mbalula.
