LISTEN: Mpofu threatens Mkhwebane inquiry chair in parliament

MPs sitting on the inquiry into Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s fitness to hold office want an investigation into the conduct of Advocate Dali Mpofu.

Dali Mpofu

This after Mpofu made threatened committee chairperson Qubudile Dyantyi during the inquiry on Tuesday.

Mpofu told the inquiry that Mkhwebane was booked off sick and could not attend the session.

However, Dyantyi refused to postpone this week’s hearings to next week.

"The only reason I am tolerating what you are doing to me is for the interest of the client otherwise you are not entitled to abuse me like you do, I am senior to you in many ways and you know it. But fine you have got the power now, you can exercise it but you will pay one day."

Dyantyi asked Mpofu if he was threatening him and Mpofu replied: "Yes, actually is not a threat but a promise."

Mpofu had requested a postponement of the inquiry hearings to prepare for Friday’s court application, but Dyantyi refused.

"Some members of the committee requested that an investigation in terms of the Powers and Privileges Act should be considered regarding the perceived threat, arguing that no Member of Parliament may be threatened while conducting their duties.

"Committee members said there is no need for intimidation or insults; the work of the committee must continue without fear or favour," said Parliament in a statement.
