Forty-five-year-old Christopher Mathebula, who was a principal at Northview High School, was driving behind a cash-in-transit vehicle on Friday along the R21 near Tembisa.

Robbers allegedly approached the vehicle and started shooting and Mathebula was hit by a stray bullet.

He later died in hospital.

Cele visited the family on Monday.

"We have lifted the case to tbat level of being taken over by the Hawks. It will be highly prioritised. There are things that have already been investigated and the Hawks will be following up," said Cele.

Friend and coworker, Mpho Malunga, described Mathebula's last moments in hospital.

"Honestly it was so bad, when I got to the hospital I saw how the blood was coming out of him, it was like someone opened a tap. The minister is here and our request is that they find us the people who do did this so we can know what happened.

Currently we have no idea and nobody has given us a brief. We need closure," said Malunga.

Cele says they will hold an emergency meeting with stakeholders in the cash-in-transit sector on Tuesday to discuss safety and security matters.
