[Listen] Wildlife crimes hampering conservation

The conservation group, Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), is concerned over the recent reports of politicians being allegedly involved in wildlife crimes.

EWT's Doctor Kelly Marnewick says wildlife trafficking is a very serious problem for the conservation of biodiversity.

"People are working really hard to ensure our rhinos and abalone are protected. If it is true that the politicians are involved it makes our work very hard in terms of conserving biodiversity," says Marnewick.

Former State Security Minister, David Mahlobo, has in the past been implicated in having strong ties with a rhino horn trafficker in the country.

Marnewick says she hopes that the law will be enforced to prosecute politicians implicated in wildlife crimes.
