[LISTEN] Zenani Mandela-Dlamini: We don’t have enough female icons
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
Former President Nelson Mandela’s daughter Zenani Mandela-Dlamini says South Africa needs more female icons.
Mandela-Dlamini spent her 67 minutes for Mandela Day at the Crown Mines Primary school in Johannesburg, where she promoted the Mandela Library project.
She handed over books on the day her father would have turned 100 years old.
The 12-set series of books are easy to read foundational books on the life of her father from a young age.
“After this series of books, we are going to do a book on Mommy because I feel that we don’t have many female icons to look up to. So, it’s very important for you to know about female icons and maybe the first start is going to be my mother Nomzamo Madikizela-Mandela.”
The CEO of the Mandela Library Project, Robert Coutts, told the media they have reached about 200 000 school children.
“All it takes if for each of us to do something small to start change and that is why the Mandela’s are actually here. They realise that talking is one thing, but actions count. It is important we recognise Mandela’s legacy and spread his ethos. We know our focus is to reach 2 million kids to form part of our reading program.”
Mandela-Dlamini said she was encouraged by the participation of South Africans in the 67 minutes for Mandela campaign.
