The United Kingdom came to a standstill on Thursday evening after their queen passed away peacefully at the age of 96.

Professor Donald McCracken says the new king will have to make major changes to the monarchy.

“The whole paraphernalia of monarchy will have to be reduced somewhat. I think there will be fewer people receiving funding for the monarchy, fewer people in the royal family.

“I think many of the archaic orders and institutions of the monarchy will have to change. Things like the OBE, Order of the British Empire, that’s quite out of date these days, and the Member of the British Empire, that will have to be changed.”

He says the biggest challenge Charles will face is the future of the British Commonwealth - which his mother was the head of.

”For many years it was an institution formed when the empire disappeared. Will it survive under him, and in what state will it survive?”

McCracken despite these massive tasks - he is confident that King Charles has enough training.
