LIVE: DA brings motion to impeach President Zuma
Updated | By Maryke Vermaak
Today will see the first time in the country's democratic history that a sitting president faces a debate and motion of impeachment.
The Democratic Alliance's motion will be heard in the National Assembly Tuesday afternoon.
Opposition party leaders held an urgent meeting at Parliament early on Tuesday to discuss their strategy.
The DA's Mabine Seabe confirmed leader Mmusi Maimane called the meeting.
"In order to consolidate a plan in the House as well as going forward following the impeachment motion should the ANC not vote in favour of removing the president from office, since he violated his oath of office as well as the constitution," Seabe said.
Political analyst Dr Mzikizi Qobo said the DA's motion was in principal the right route to follow.
"However, from a strategy point of view, they could have done this much better i.e. they could have spent time talking to members of the ANC," Qobo said.
Meanwhile, the motion comes after a marathon meeting held by the ANC's national working committee until midnight last night.
Delegates agreed that they were satisfied with the president's apology, saying he humbled himself in front of the nation.
