Load shedding downgraded to Stage 2 as President prepares to intervene at Eskom

Load shedding was downgraded to Stage 2 on Tuesday night as President Cyril Ramaphosa prepared to intervene at Eskom.

Ramaphosa cut his trip to Egypt short to address the crisis back home with rolling black-outs crippling the country's economy.

Ramaphosa will also visit those affected by flooding following a week of rain in the interior of South Africa. 

On Tuesday, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy announced short and medium-term interventions to address the electricity and energy crisis facing the country. 

These include allowing Independent Power Producers (IPP) to come on stream sooner. 

The Presidency announced on Tuesday that Ramaphosa will meet with the board and management of the embattled power utility on Wednesday.

On Tuesday night, Eskom said in a statement that had moved to Stage 2 load shedding from Stage 4 - after hitting Stage 6 the day before - as they had "made good progress in the recovery from localised flooding at...power stations and have returned several power station units as scheduled."
