Local elections will not interfere with vaccination efforts, vows Makhura

Gauteng Premier David Makhura says the upcoming local government elections will not interfere with the province’s vaccination efforts.
Makhura made the remarks at the FNB stadium south of Johannesburg on Wednesday.
The polls are set to be held on November 1.
“We had our provincial coronavirus command council (meeting) yesterday and one of the issues raised was noting the decision of the Constitutional Court as well as the IEC,” said Makhura.
“With regards to the elections, this is the decision that we have made that we are going to make sure that we integrate our vaccination programme into the election programme because that is given and there is nothing we can do about that.”

The elections will come at a time where Gauteng is finally making some significant strides in reducing new Covid-19 cases and vaccinating its residents.
Gauteng is administering at least 75 000 vaccines a day.
Makhura also confirmed that the province is officially out of the third wave.
"As of yesterday, the national command council has declared that we are out of the third wave as Gauteng. Gauteng is out of the third wave."
