Lock, stock and barrel: police awaiting ballistics on 'gear lever' gun
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
Police are awaiting the results of ballistic tests performed on an unlicensed firearm that was used as a gear lever in Randfontein, West of Johannesburg.
Randfontein Police Spokesperson Carmen Hendricks says the gun was seized as part of the Safer Festive Season campaign that forms part of Operation Okay Molao.

"During the operation, an unlicensed firearm was recovered in one of the vehicles in Mohlakeng," says Hendricks, noting that the information leading to the find was received from community members.
Upon inspecting the car, they found the gun was being used as a gear lever.
The suspect was arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and has already appeared in the Randfontein Magistrate's court.
However, the case was struck off the roll, pending the ballistics report.
"Violence is the leading cause of death in South Africa, and firearms are the cause of some deaths. AS the police we must make sure that our community is safe and protected," said Hendricks.
