Looting, not corruption took place in Joburg: Mashaba
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba says the City hasn't been losing money through corruption, but through looting.
Mashaba is marking his first 100 days in office.
The former business man wants to restore the country's economic hub to its rightful place as a tourist and business destination.
Mashaba says following the local government elections power has finally been transferred back to young people.
He says the city is in far worse condition than he thought it would be.
"Since taking office, we have been inundated daily with cases of corruption, nepotism and fraud. It has gotten to the point where we could not investigate as quickly as the cases were rolling in," says Mashaba.
Mashaba says corruption is not a strong enough term for what was taking place in the City of Johannesburg.
"It was to me outright, shameless looting," says Mashaba.
The mayor says his administration has hit the ground running - fighting corruption, addressing the housing backlog and improving service delivery.
