It emerged during a Q&A session between the media and Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga during a visit to Mbilwi High School in Limpopo on Wednesday.

Motshekga was asked what steps would be taken against the teachers.

She said a report will inform the Basic Education Department on what steps, if any, need to be taken.

"We'll be informed by the report and we'll be informed by what our policies say and can't pre-empt what it will actually say and we can't say yes if they were negligent we will fire them.

"We'll have to follow and take them through discipline. It will depend on the basis of what the report says and take appropriate action on what the report says."

Mavhungu is believed to have committed suicide after she was brutally assaulted by a fellow pupil on Monday.

A video of the violent assault subsequently went viral on social media on Tuesday.
