M2 closure taking longer than expected: JMPD
Updated | By Neo Motloung
Johannesburg motorists have been advised to avoid the M2 between the Crown Interchange and Maritzburg on Thursday morning, where authorities were on the scene, closing off the whole highway.
The on and off ramps will remain shut until the end of October, to allow for repair works at bridges.
This comes after the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) realised parts of the support structures on the M2 bridge have moved and were affecting the structural stability of some bridges on the M2 motorway.
Repairs will take place at Karzene and Selby sections of the M2 bridge.
Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar says the closure of M2 between the Crown Interchange and Maritzburg was supposed to come into effect at 6 am on Thursday, but was delayed.
"The M2 west Heidelberg Road is currently being blocked off and the closure is taking longer than anticipated because the steel barricades are much heavy and are taking forever to offload," says Minnaar.
Minnaar has advised motorist to use the N3 and N1 if they are going to Sandton and avoid M2 west Maritzburg off-ramp.
