Mabuza vows to 'speed up' process to address military veterans’ demands

Deputy President David Mabuza has promised military veterans their demands are being attended to by government.

Mabuza was speaking at the Bloemspruit Air Force Base in Bloemfontein on Thursday.
He was addressing the veterans in his capacity as chairperson of the Presidential Task Team on Military Veterans.
"These benefits that are outlined in the Act, we must try very hard to deliver them, and even beyond the amendment of the Act we must try very hard,” he said.
“I can assure you that we will succeed. It is unfortunate that we have lost some of our military veterans in the process while we still trying to improve the services that must accrue yourselves.
"It is also our commitment to try and improve the workings of the department of military veterans, it is important for the department to up its game. There is no room for failure, we will work with the necessary speed."
Mabuza said government will do an audit on veterans who have already received the benefits and those who are outstanding.
The task team, which includes Defence Minister Thandi Modise, was appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa to find solutions to issues plaguing the country’s military veterans.
In October last year, a group of over 50 disgruntled military veterans held a group of ministers hostage at a hotel in Pretoria demanding government address their grievances.
The case against the 53 veterans was eventually dropped due to a lack of evidence.
