African National Congress (ANC) stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela believes the party's new leadership will see it put up a much stronger performance in next year's elections.
Madikizela-Mandela was accompanied by President Cyril Ramaphosa as she verified her details at her local voting station in Orlando West on Saturday.
Earlier Ramaphosa visited Madikizela-Mandela at her home nearby.
Madikizela-Mandela told reporters that the ANC is chasing a two-thirds majority win.
The struggle veteran has been highly critical of the ANC under the leadership of for president Jacob Zuma over the past few years, saying she fears for the future of the country.
"I am the ANC, in the first place. We are coming up with great surprises. You can see I am always with my president and we are going to surprise the country. I have just told them inside (my house) that I am back."
Madikizela-Mandela was discharged from a Johannesburg hospital in January after being treated for a kidney infection.
"We wish the country will do the right thing. We had difficulties, great difficulties and it is not going to be easy but we are going to overcome. We've already overcome some of the obstacles. I am confident we will lead this South Africa to victory."
Voting stations across the country are open until 5pm on Sunday.
