Mahumapelo: Court case not aimed at Ramaphosa

Former North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo has denied claims that the latest court battle within the African National Congress (ANC) is aimed at weakening President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The ANC is at each other’s throat – again.

Mahumapelo and several disgruntled branches took the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to court over its decision to nullify the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC).

The applicants suffered a blow after the High Court in Johannesburg ruled that the case cannot be brought as an urgent matter.

Mahumapelo says the ANC is preaching unity but their actions are dividing the party.

He vowed that they will return to the court in the coming days.

“I don’t know whether one can come to the conclusion that it is a threat of the leadership of comrade Cyril Ramaphosa.

“I don’t think when members of the African National Congress raise issues in the manner in which we’ve raised them you can characterise that as a threat against somebody.”

He refuted reports that the motive behind the court battle is a power battle – alluding that the ANC should have followed its own processes.

“What the NEC is supposed to be doing in this instance is to what we should have done as the PEC – continue the engagements, make sure you work with the structures of the ANC on the ground, make sure you unite the organisation.

“If you get rid of an elected structure 4 months, 5 months before the provincial conference – the NEC must explain how does that bring unity and renewal,” said Mahumapelo.
