Mahumapelo has been fighting corruption, says ANC

The African National Congress (ANC) in North West has given its backing to Premier Supra Mahumapelo while resisting any calls for him to step down.

Violent protests engulfed the province last week with angry community members demanding that he step down amid mounting allegations of corruption.

But as a media briefing on Tuesday, the ANC regions in the province dismissed the calls.

“We believe that the premier has performed exceptionally well. It is our view that the call by the revolutionary council, COSATU, SACP and opposition parties is malicious and misinformed. We argue that the narrative for recalling the premier must be performance-based and supported by factual evidence that indeed he is corrupt,” said the ANC’s Lupang Rothman.

The party believes Mahumapelo is being targeted for his tough stance on corruption.

“It is our considered view that this call, amongst other things, is triggered by the posture taken by the premier on corruption in his pronouncements during the State of the Province Address. When he requested that all current premiers, MEC’s, HOD’s and municipal managers must avail themselves when requested by law enforcement agencies,” Rothman said.

The ANC did admit that the protesting communities have legitimate service delivery grievances that need to be addressed.
