Maile calls for an urgent meeting with Speaker of Tshwane

Embattled Tshwane Mayor, Stevens Mokgalapa, survived yet another attempt by the African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to unseat him and the Democratic Alliance (DA) from governing the city.

Chaos erupted when councilors failed to agree on who has the right to determine the sequence of events at the special sitting.

This came after Speaker Katlego Mathebe wanted her motion to be the final item on the agenda, while the EFF and ANC demanded it be moved to the top.

The meeting subsequently failed to reach a quorum when the ANC and EFF walked-out.

This meant the special sitting collapsed without the motions of no confidence being heard.

Gauteng Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Lebogang Maile, says his department has written a letter to the Speaker to explain what transpired at the meeting and also provide recordings of what happened.

"We will also receive a report from the officials of CoGTA who were present at the meeting," says Maile.

The MEC has told JacarandaFM News that he has also called for an urgent meeting with the Speaker, which is expected to take place on Monday.

"After which, we will make a determination on how to proceed," adds Maile.

He has also urged the Tshwane Council to put the needs of the residents first and stop pushing 'narrow political interest.'
