Maile laments lack of governance, stability at Human Settlements
Updated | By Neo Motloung
Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Lebogang Maile has slammed the “underperformance and lackadaisical attitude” of some officials in his department.
Maile told reporters in Sandton on Monday that this has contributed to the failure by his office to obtain clean audits.
Gauteng currently sits with a housing backlog of around 1.2 million.
Maile said his department has been working on a turnaround strategy, including tackling governance and poor financial management.
"Governance and stability have been one of the critical challenges that have negatively impacted on the department, with leadership instability being the main problem.
"We have taken decisive steps to address this matter through the appointment of the Head of Department who is a seasoned, skilled, proven technocrat with a record of service delivery excellence, clean audits and good governance wherever she led.
"We have appointed a Chief Financial Officer with a mandate to clean up the financial management of the department and put in place systems and process that will bring about institutional stability to the organisation's finances and financial management.”
The MEC said the department's anti-fraud and corruption unit has concluded investigations into several officials.
"The cases are at different stages of the legal process, with some suspects having been charged and released on bail. Other cases still under further investigation from law enforcement agencies and some at the trial stage, as we seek to criminally prosecute all those who commit acts of malfeasance.”
