Maimane: Bosasa bribed Ramaphosa

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane told Jacaranda FM News on Friday that he regarded a R500 000 payment made by Bosasa, to the son of the president, as a bribe.

During an oral question and answer session in the National Assembly a week ago, Maimane asked President Cyril Ramaphosa about the payment made by Bosasa CEO Gavin Watson to  Andile Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa replied in Parliament that he was unaware of the payment and that he would take the matter up with his son.

A few days later, the President penned a letter to the Speaker of Parliament, Baleka Mbete, admitting the payment made on behalf of Watson and explaining it was used to fund his presidential campaign.

Maimane says he does not regard this as a donation.

"If it was not a bribe, they wouldn't have gone on an elaborate plan to hide it, using trusts and shell companies," says Maimane.

He adds the President should face an Executive Ethics Code charge and for the Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, to determine if Ramaphosa had indeed lied to Parliament.

Maimane has also called on Ramaphosa to investigate government contracts given to Bosasa after paying the alleged bribe, to end corruption and clear his name.

Maimane says Watson is the new form of the Guptas and Ramaphosa has been captured.

"The ANC has always been corrupt, all this proves is that they have put a new face to the same old same old. What we used to have is uBabaka Duduzani, and now we have uBabaka Andile."

Maimane has rejected claims that his recent stances on Ramaphosa are part of politicking.
