Maimane: Nearly time for ANC to hand over reigns
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane says the African National Congress (ANC) cannot be trusted to improve the lives of ordinary South Africans.

Addressing the DA Gauteng's elective congress in Midrand, Maimane said only the DA is capable of wiping the slate clean and providing South Africa with a brand-new start.
"Forget about the ANC's December conference - nothing that happens there will make any difference to the predicament we find ourselves in. How can an organisation focused on the past be trusted to build a new future?
"We must focus on building our economy. If Eskom defaults on its spiralling debt and the captured (Finance Minister) Malusi Gigaba is forced to bail them out, it will certainly mean a further downgrade."

He told the delegates the ANC only has a year and a half left in power.
"Our opponents like to say that we are not a party for all South Africans - that we can't be trusted. They'll carry on saying this because they have nothing else to offer voters. They are worried. They know that they have at most 18 months left in power.
"They know that South Africans have woken up to the fact that they need to free themselves from the oppression of corruption that is destroying our future."
Maimane vowed to roll up his sleeves ahead of the 2019 elections and go door-to-door to spread the party's message of change.
