Maimane wants the question to be added to Thursday's much anticipated question-and-answer session with the president.

On Wednesday, Maimane wrote to National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise requesting the addition of the question:

"Whether the appointments of Ms K P S Ntshavheni to the position of Minister of Small Business Development, Ms R T Siweya to the position of Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Mr F Mbalula to the position of Minister of Transport and Mr Z Kodwa to the position of Deputy Minister of State Security were informed in any way by the fact that both worked for, and received payment from his CR17 campaign?"

Leaked emails revealed that some ministers and deputy ministers reportedly received payment from the CR17 campaign.

"Many emails have been circulated around making serious allegations about people who are now serving in cabinet who have been paid,” Maimane says.

"The constitution provides that the cabinet using rationality and therefore we want the president to bring South Africa to confidence that 1 - he did not use the payment that were given to individuals to be ministers in government.

"We demand that actually the test of rationality that the president brings the nation into his confidence so that we know that no other ulterior motives were used in appointments."
