Major breakthrough in cop's murder

Police say they've made a major breakthrough following the murder of an officer.

Limpopo police have arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with the murder of Colonel Phineas Marubini Mamatsiari.


The 55-year-old was shot and killed by two suspects and his police car hijacked on Sunday.


Provincial police spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe says the suspect was arrested on Tuesday.

"It is alleged that the deceased arrived home from work when he was attacked, shot and killed and the state vehicle which he was travelling with hijacked.


"The suspect has been positively linked to the murder and attempted murder of another constable (as well as) four armed robberies at four clinics in Waterval. He will appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate Court tomorrow," Ngoepe says.

A firearm was recovered during the arrest.


The 32-year-old constable is still recovering in hospital.


Ngoepe says he cannot be named as he is a witness.


"The hijacked police car and a firearm were recovered in the bushes along the Thohoyandou and Phundamaria road on Monday."
