Major breakthrough in the fight against rhino poaching
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The Hawks have arrested six members of a syndicate involved in the trafficking of poached rhino horns in Mpumalanga on Tuesday.
The crime-fighting unit says the arrested suspects include two alleged kingpins, one right-hand man, two police officers and a former cop.
The Hawks' Hangwani Mulaudzi says they are still on the trail of another police officer who is suspected of being part of the syndicate.
He adds the investigation into the rhino horn trafficking has been ongoing for a year.
"We talking about kingpins that are involved in the selling of rhino horns and have been on our radar for a while," says Mulaudzi.
The Hawks also seized alleged stolen properties from the suspects, including luxury vehicles.
Mulaudzi says the suspects are expected to appear in the White River Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
He hopes the arrest will lead to a decrease in rhino poaching in the area.
