Majority of applications for R350 grant from young people, says Sassa
Updated | By Makhosazane Twala
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) says young people account for 60% of the applications they receive for the R350 Covid-19 grant.

About 5% of the applicants hold tertiary qualifications.
The grant was introduced during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic to assist those who have lost their jobs or who are unable to find work.
In a statement, Sassa said the number of young South Africans applying for the grant comes as no surprise, given the youth unemployment rate of 63%.
“This is a great cause for concern and the agency remains committed to playing its part in fighting unemployment. So far 4-million people have received R350 SRD grant payments out of nearly 5.3-million approved applications by July 19.”
