The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng says it has been given an assurance that its regional chairperson Geoff Makhubo will comply with a summons served for him to appear at the commission into state capture.

The Johannesburg mayor will testify on Friday on matters relating to EOH and Regiments Capital.

The commission on Wednesday heard that Makhubo used his influence to source donations for the ANC from the two firms during his time as the party’s Joburg treasurer.

Steven Powell, head of law firm ENS’s forensic department, told the commission of how a false company was used to allegedly to channel money for the ANC’s benefit and to Makhubo’s company, Molelwane Consulting.

The regional party's spokesperson Sasabona Manganye says Makhubo will cooperate with the commission.

"He is willing to subject himself to all processes thereof, with a full understanding that the ANC as a leader of society and as a parliament of the people must always ensure its leaders are held accountable.

"Moreover, the ANC will be observing the developments of the Zondo Commission’s State Capture Inquiry, and where necessary, the ANC will advise on the course of action.”

Manganye also called on ANC members who want to support Makhubo to do so in their individual capacity.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has called Makhubo to be removed from office.

"Makhubo is also alleged to have solicited regular donations worth millions from Information Technology company, EOH Holdings, while he was the ANC Johannesburg Regional Treasurer, all in exchange for tenders at the City of Johannesburg,” the party said in a statement.

"These are just two examples that illustrate why Geoff Makhubo should be removed from his mayoral position. The residents of Johannesburg are being led by a man tainted with corruption.”

The party is expected to picket outside the commission on Friday.
