Makhubo vows to improve food security in Alex
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
Johannesburg Mayor Geoff Makhubo has promised Alexandra residents that the city is in the process of finding solutions to deal with a lack of food security in the area.
On Tuesday, scores of residents queued outside a school hoping to get food parcels for their families.
Speaking inside a two-bedroom house, occupied by 20 people, Makhubo said the city is in discussions with its social partners.
"I am told that the situation was dealt with and diffused. We were worried that the people who were queuing could cause problems. We are going to be talking to our partners not to make promises they can't fulfill. But we still need their donations so we can distribute through the Department of Social Development."

Makhubo also visited the local police station to discuss allegations of assault made by residents against police officers and members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).
A 40-year-old man was assaulted and killed, allegedly by members of the SANDF, during a crackdown on Friday.
