Makhura concerned over increase in corruption in Gauteng govt

The Gauteng provincial government is concerned over a regression in clean governance practice in some parts of the government.
Premier David Makhura told members of the provincial legislature on Friday that corruption is “rearing its ugly head again”.
The premier was presenting his end-of-year report to a virtual sitting of the Gauteng legislature on Friday morning.
"We are deeply concerned that in parts of our provincial government, some of our departments, some of our agencies there is a regression on this commitment to clean audits,” Makhura said.
"But I want to say... we are not going to take this laying down, we are going to tackle it agency by agency, department by department.”
The premier told provincial lawmakers one of the ways to tackle corruption is the relocation of the Provincial Forensic Audit Unit (PFAU) from Treasury to his office and boosting its capacity.
"The Provincial Forensic Audit Unit has been working very well, even when it was in our Treasury, as I speak, they have finalised 73 forensic investigations and 66 cases have been referred to law enforcement agencies for criminal prosecutions and recovery of public funds," he said.
Makhura said the unit is working closely with the Special Investigative Unite (SIU).
